Chi-square analysis is a mathematical approach toward discerning the probability
of a statistically probability that things are related. For instance if I
wanted to figure out if college students make more money than the rest of the
populace, and want to prove it statistically, I would compare the numbers
concerning income and degree of education (for example) and Chi-square the
observed vs expected amount of income. Salient point: the more data points you
have the larger the summation. The smaller the summation the more statistically
likely, according to the analysis, but obviously if you have more things to add
the larger the mathematical summation, therefore the statistically
un-correlated.

The obvious solution would be to average them out, but this is not part of the
equation.
